Dear Friends,

Hope you are well together with the family under this time of confusion across the globe.

I wish you a healthy and happy new year, and strongly wish all of us to win over this repugnant covid19 as soon as possible.

Even under the COVID19, The Hulbert Memorial Society have done some meaningful activities to commemorate Dr. Hulbert.

We had the memorial service in August and also Essay Contest of the book <Homer B. Hulbert: Joseon must blossom!>,

a Dr, Hulbert's biography. Awarding ceremony was held on Dec. 17 where 14 awardees were prized with 5.7 million won in total.

The number of participants this year tripled from the previous year, which reflects that the awareness on Dr. Hulbert is increasing among Koreans.

We also, upon the memorial service, published a new book, a translation into Korean of <Korea as Seen from the Saddle>, travelogue to PyongYang in 1890,

'헐버트의 조선시대(1890) 평양 여행기' <말 위에서 본 조선>. This intrigued many Koreans and I received many phone calls from readers saying so impressed with Dr. Hulbert's observatory power and insights into the future.

We also, upon the 130th anniversary of the publication, published a facsimile of <사민필지SaMinPilJi>, the first textbook in Hangeul(Korean alphabet) authored by Dr. Hulbert in 1891, together with the translation into modern Hangeul. This book is so valuable treasure for Korea but this was not properly recognized by scholars.

Now historic value of this book is increasing rapidly among education and Hangeul scholars.

We also set up electronic edition of the book <Homer B. Hulbert: Joseon Must Blossom!>, Dr .Hulbert's biography, publised in 2019.

Again, best wishes to all of you for the new year.

Kim DongJin(DJ), Chairman, The Hulbert Memorial Society
