Dear Friends,
I am pleased to share the exciting news that I have published a book titled What About KOREA?,
with the subtitle Homer B. Hulbert, a Champion of Korean Independence, Justice, and Humanity.
It is the first comprehensive biography of Dr. Homer B. Hulbert written in English, aimed at global readers
who seek to understand Korea’s path to modernity and independence through the life of an extraordinary American.
This 488-page book, released in Korea in March and now available on Amazon, has been licensed by the U.S. Library of Congress.
To celebrate the launch, many Korean friends encouraged me to hold a book concert, which was held on March 28th
at the Seoul YMCA—a meaningful venue, as Dr. Hulbert was instrumental in its founding in 1903.
About 150 invited friends and distinguished guests attended, including:
JongChan Lee, Chairman of the Heritage of Korean Independence,
JongHo Jeon, Administrator of the Seoul District, Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs,
Robert Post, Minister-Counselor for Public Diplomacy of the U.S. Embassy in Korea,
JaeIl Kwon, Chairman of the Korean Language Society,
Jeffrey Jones, lawyer and former chairman of AMCHAM in Korea, and
InBok Kim, Chairman of the Seoul YMCA.
The event opened with soprano Professor Baek performing Wistful Diamond Mountain—a favorite hiking spot of Hulbert's,
now located in North Korea—and Amazing Grace. Acclaimed singer YuSeok Seo also performed Arirang, the traditional Korean song
for which Dr. Hulbert first notated the musical score in 1896.
I then had a special on-stage talk with a TV anchor about the background and purpose of the book.
I began by explaining the book’s title, What About KOREA?—which echoes the powerful statement Dr. Hulbert submitted to
the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee in August 1919, shortly after the March First Manse Uprising in which
approximately 7,000 Koreans were killed during their non-violent resistance against Japanese colonial rule.
I also outlined the four main purposes of the book:
- To shed light on Dr. Hulbert’s virtuous life—a model of justice and humanity rooted in Puritan and Christian ideals, and a role model for youth worldwide;
- To share the Hulbert family motto—“Character is more fundamental than victory”—as a guiding principle for creating a righteous world;
- To introduce Korea’s cultural excellence, including Hangeul (Korean alphabet), turtle ship, and Korean musicality that have contributed to today’s K-pop,
as revealed through Hulbert’s early exploration of Korean identity;
- To show Americans that Dr. Hulbert is a source of pride for the United States—a true embodiment of the values nurtured by the American educational system of the late 19th century.
The book has received endorsements from:
James Bradley, author of The China Mirage, The Imperial Cruise, Flyboys, and Flags of Our Fathers;
JongChan Lee, Chairman of the Heritage of Korean Independence and former Director of the SotKorean CIA;
Bruce W. Hulbert, grandson of Dr. Hulbert, Vietnam War veteran and retired U.S. Navy Captain.
I deeply appreciate all your support--particularly Carole Shaw, author of The Foreign Destruction of Korean Independence, James Bradley, author of The Imperial Cruise
Professor Hope E. May of Central Michigan University, and Karl T. Schutz--whose support has been instrumental in completing this meaningful work over the past two decades.
I would be grateful if you could help spread the word or share this work with those who might find it meaningful.
I sincerely hope that readers—especially Americans—will come to learn who Dr. Hulbert truly was.
I’ve attached a news release for those who may be interested.
Thank you for your continued support of The Hulbert Memorial Society.
With warm regards,
DJ
