Dear Friends,
Merry Christmas to you and your families!
I’m delighted to share some wonderful news about a piece of Korean cultural heritage that has been returned to Korea,
thanks to the generosity of Dr. Hulbert’s descendants.
As detailed in the attached article by Robert D. Neff, a freelance author and reporter who focuses on foreign contributors to Korean history
(published in The Korea Times today), a beautiful mother-of-pearl inlaid cabinet once used by Dr. Hulbert was returned to Korea in November.
This cabinet is to be on public display, allowing us all to appreciate its historical significance.
Kimball A. Hulbert, the great-grandson of Dr. Hulbert and a descendant of his second son, William, graciously donated this treasure
to The Hulbert Memorial Society.
I extend my heartfelt gratitude to him and other members of the Hulbert family, including Bruce Hulbert, a descendant of Dr. Hulbert’s
third son, Leonard, who donated invaluable original books earlier this year. These include The Passing of Korea, The History of Korea,
and a rare album documenting Korea’s royal funeral services around 1900.
The Hulbert family also shared that this cabinet may have been displayed at the Victoria & Albert Museum for a significant period.
Dr. Hulbert was known for showcasing Korean antiquities, books, and artifacts in renowned institutions like the British Museum
and other prominent museums in America.
Additionally, I’m pleased to report that on December 17th, we hosted a well-received Essay Contest Award Ceremony for Dr. Hulbert’s biography.
This year’s event was particularly inspiring due to the enthusiastic participation of many young students, ensuring that
Dr. Hulbert’s legacy continues to resonate with Korea’s youth.
Thank you for your unwavering support of The Hulbert Memorial Society. Wishing you all a joyful holiday season and a happy,
healthy, and prosperous New Year!
With warm regards,
DJ
Congratulations! After the Essay Contest Awarding Ceremony.
