The Memorial Serviece for the 59th anniversary of Dr. Hulberts passing was held Tuesday, Aug. 5th, 2008 at Yangwha foreigners cemetery in Mapo-gu. Seoul with approximately 500 attendants, and with the participation of dignitaries including Hyong O Kim, the Speaker of National Assembly.
Memorial Address were given by DJ Kim, chairman of the Society, Hyong O Kim, the Speaker of National assembly, Jong Jeong Lee, deputy administrator of Patriots and Veterans Affairs and Chang Kyu Cha, secretary general, Korean Liberation Association.
And Guest remarks were delivered by Tami Overby, president and CEO of American Chamber of Commerce in Korea, and Young Sup Shin, mayor of Mapo-gu, Seoul.
The theme of this year was Dr. Hulberts love of korean language as reported by Korea Times, a leading english newspaper in korea, with the title of "Hulbert extolled superiority of Korean Language". The Hulbert Memorial Society displayed Smithsonian 1903 Annual Report which carries an article written by Dr. Hulbert on the superiority of korean language. The Smithsonian, the Washington-based Institute, published the Report in 1903 to be sent to the US Congress. In the article Dr. Hulbert concluded that Korean surpasses English as a medium for public speaking.
The Hulbert Memorial Society presents the plaque of appreciation every year, and this year it is presented to 2 gentlemen; Mr. Taek-Poo Chun, honorary
president of YMCA Korea, Mr. Jueng-Hwan Her, a government official at Seoul District of Patriots and Veterans Affairs.
